Open source rotational device for laser

Postby Gene Uselman » Sat Jul 16, 2016 11:28 am

I built this a few months ago and have not used it yet but time is just about up as my daughter bought 24 fake 'Yeti' tumblers for give-aways for the sign shop. This is mostly 80/20 extrusions (I adapted it to use the 10 series I had on hand) and the end-plates are machined from Corian- but they could just as well be acrylic cut on the laser. It can be easily scaled up or down depending on the size of the machine. The pulleys are 3d prints that are available on line at reasonable cost- I have less than $100 in everything. Info is here:

I don't believe that Gene has had the opportunity to try it yet as he had to order a different driver for the stepper motor he has. He is away for a while but will probably get it working in the next month!

Did you ever get this working Gene? Did you pay for the 3D printed parts? I started scanning the BOM and a bunch of things are hard to find or cost twice as much as quoted. I would probably be over $200 building this.

Edit:

Just as an example, the BOM lists this HFS5 preassembly nut package as $1.12 for the 8 you need. They are $19.32 for a package of 100, smallest you can get. They are $1.55 (not shipped) for 8 if you divide them out, but I can't buy only 8.

Ok, I got creative with a couple of the parts and spent about $150. I tried not to order packages of 25-100 parts when I could help it, but I still have a TON of extra parts coming of certain things. If everything goes well I might but together a couple of kits so that people don't have to spend hours sourcing everything to build this assuming there is any interest.

Interesting Sergey but my Russian is a bit rusty :D . We have a lot of Russian and Ukrainian ex-pats in Mpls, along with a huge community of other emigrants... and it is working fine.

Dustin- I ordered the 3d printed parts (I don't have a 3D printer and they were only $20 as I recall- this is open source so I am sure the plans are available) and machined the end pieces from solid surface material (think Corian), altho now I would cut them on the laser- easier. I have not tried mine as the stepper I bought is 2 phase and my main machine is 3 phase. My current plan is to use it on the Bodor which does not have the Z travel that my 130w does, the very nice rotary that came with the Bodor ( and is much taller) will reside with me, I will buy a 3phase stepper for that.

I am sending Keith my Vectric Aspire files, I anyone else has Aspire I will happily post them. Gene

The Russian video was fascinating. Having a rack and pinion to drive the rotating "chuck" using the motion of the gantry is genius. How much simpler can it get?

I had hoped there was a link in the video description for the creation of the device, but no such luck.

Very good software! I did the same thing I use, I like it, but so far only for milling and engraving machine, laser machine, it use is very limited especially if there are many curves in the file.

I love it, I was machining a very intricate piece that I modeled in Aspire this weekend. Gene
