Another LED base..

Post by Preben Hovedskou » Fri Aug 19, 2016 1:06 pm

Hi Folks....

There is quite a lot of nice designs of LED-bases out there. Here is my own humble version.

1) I made (this time) the base in plywood and glued it together in 3 pieces.: A buttonpart, a plate for the leds and a toppart.
The 3 parts is snug fit and is just pressed together.

2) On Ebay I bought some sets of 50cm RGB-LED strips with remote for arround 3$/set. They are powered via USB, and everything is encluded.

3) Using my "Dremmel", I made holes for power-connector and remote-reciever. (Using a drill will flush the plywood)
I designed the layers of the box with only a thin wall to drill through.

4) Then I mounted the LED-controller with a gluegun. (and YES.. It's not looking nice, but nobody will se this) :D

To make most light going to the edge of the acrylic, I mount all the LEDs side by side like this.:

5) Grab the LED strip and fold it backwards at the LEDS.

6) Do this for every LED on the strip.

7) Then fold the strip into a "harmonica".

8) Place the first LED in the slot, and glue the strip to the board.

9) Start folding a little bit of the "harmonica" and glue it to the board. Let the glue dry and make another bit...

10) Finish the whole row and cut off the remaining strip.

11) Now you have arround 18-20 LEDS sitting side by side in the slot. Some is wobbling a little bit, but that's no problem!

12) You can now close the box. Connect the strip to the LED-controller and close everything.

13) The finished LED-base ready for show.. :D
You can make it like you want it... Plywood or acrylic or MDF or.. or.. or..
Try to make the layer holding the LEDs in clear acrylic, then you will have a realy nice effect.

14) 15) 16).. Now you can fit all your nice designs in the base..

Very nice- I have not had much luck with having the upper acrylic larger than the leds in the base, these look great. Gene

@Gene..:

I have no problem with the acrylic larger than the slot. This base gives very much light to the edge and the acrylic is full lighted.
The designs are not engraved into the acrylic but cutted about 50% into the surface. Just cut with medium power and moderate speed.
This make the sign ligt up a lot more.!

If anyone is interested I can upload the files to the Share-section..??

Hi Pepsi
What program did you use to be able to cut the out line on both number 14 and 16.
I'm really struggling to work out how to cut an outline of a given shape.

Thanks
Kev
