Downgrade laser tube

Post by Alexis Tzoulis » Thu Jan 05, 2017 11:35 pm

I plan to downgrade my laser tube from 50w which has from factory to 40w because i need better quality in engraving granite.
My machine is ebay redsail x700 clone 60w(real 50w).
Should i change also power supply to a lower one 40w ?

I doubt changing from a 50w to a 40w is going to make a difference. It would be more appropriate to think about doing this from a 100w to a 40w.

Are you using the most appropriate length laser lens for engraving your specific material type?

Iam using 1.5'' lens for 300dpi.
I saw a large machine with ruida controller especially designed for engraving stone and uses 40w chinese glass tube.

This is the reason iam asking for downgrading my tube.

Better quality in what regard? Lower wattage isn't the key when you are at only 50 watts. I'm at 80 watts and with only a trial or two can do decent quality. Do you have photograv or similar software? That is the key if you are wanting photo engraving. And I would change DPI to 600 (0.04) on your settings.

+1 with john. i have a 100W tube and i have successfully engraved on 0.2 or 0.3mm cardboard without getting through. i have to say that for paper cutting, this is an issue because too much speed cause sloppy curves, but this does not happen when engraving since the arm just moves along X-axis on each pass. then you can use high speed (>200mm/s) without accuracy issue, hence no burning trough.

also, engraving granite requires some power, and i really doubt that 50W would be "too much", i have tested this myself and it requires all the power you can put onto, or you will have to reduce speed, which is not required for accuracy.

I would suggest looking at your focused output dot size instead if a different tube.
Check mirror alignment then your focus lense.

Do you mean change the "Interval(mm):" size to 0.04 in the Layer Parameter? What size is appropriate for a 1.5" and 2.0" lens, respectively?

I have changed my lens from 1.5" to 2" and i have a slight improvement.
For best granite absolute black without flakes max dpi is 300.
My main problem is that machine does not print 256 shades of grey in fact it prints only 3 shades white/mid/black .
So it is very difficult to print a photo on granite with only 3 shades..

If you've run into the problem of limited gradient capability, consider an experiment using half-tone graphics. They are "two color" images, in that it's as dark as possible and as light as possible, but the size of the individual dots are varied to give the eye the equivalent gradient. Even today's newspapers continue to use half-toning for black and white images. Many graphics programs also provide for this feature. I did a quick check of the manual and no reference is found to half-tone. A quick search with The Google for "inkscape halftone" resulted in 27000 returns indicating that one could create an image using that software (or many others) and implement it with the laser. With 300 dpi resolution, the level of detail should be quite good. My old high school print shop aimed for 65 dpi on an offset press, probably pretty coarse by today's computer standards.

Alexis, what is limiting you to only three shades? Is the material not capable of producing any other shades, or is it something with your machine or software?
