Chuck Style Rotary.

Post by Keith Sherwin » Sat Oct 15, 2016 5:50 pm

I would like to get settings that people actually use with their "CHUCK" style rotaries. NOT the three wheel rotary.
We are trying to figure out the settings for the manual.
Please post the settings that work for you here.
Circle Pulse is _____?
Diameter is _____?
Y-Axis stepper setting _____ if possible?

PLEASE, ONLY REPLY IF YOU ACTUALLY USE A CHUCK STYLE ROTARY & have DATA
All other posts will be deleted and you will get a warning.
If you have one and are not able to get it to work, please send me a PM.
Other questions or answers, please start a new post.
Thanks,
Keith

Well, it seems as only two people in the forum have a Chuck style Rotary. That is a huge surprise!

After doing some test with Keith, can tell that with the rotary chuck style, the user tab for rotary work very well in this way :

(read)
rotary : yes
circle pulse : pulses of stepper motor to complete a revolution (360°). (gear relation / stepper)
diameter : diameter of material (accurate as possible, because the error here will multiplying the error in the result
(write)

example : my stepper driver is setting to do 12800 steps / rev
I have a belt with pinion (stepper) of 16 tooth and crown of 40 tooth, then 40/16 = 2.5
result = 12800*2.5 = 32000
EDIT:Changed formula to correct method. Keith

Chuck Rotary in a 60w red box 700x500 laser.

Circle Pulse is 15000.000
Diameter is 67
Y-Axis stepper setting 16.81636
Controller rate 5000
Stepper cog 24 teeth
chuck cog 72 teeth
chuck circumference 260mm

Now with this setup and drawing a 20mm square on a can with a 67mm diameter the y cuts a perfect 20mm side, HOWEVER the x axis gets shortened to 15mm.... I'm new to rotary but have followed the guid to the letter and double checked everything, just wierd its shortening the x side.

Any ideas?

regards

EDIT!

Just went into the vendor settings and changed the step rate using the "Graph Length" against the "measuring length" calculator, saved the settings and thats sorted it. perfect 20mm square and perfect line round the circumference.

I've used mine a few times engraving glasses and cups (glass, acrylic and stainless steel) and used regular scan settings. As Kev said, once you get the device settings sorted it works like flat engraving. You can make different appliances for using the rotary chuck to hold a variety of shapes.
Setting on mine worked out to 19,000 steps per revolution.
