which kind of anti-freeze agent

Post by sebastien laforet » Thu Oct 20, 2016 3:27 pm

hello,

"winter is coming", and my machine is based in a non-insulated workshop, so the temperature can get very cold.

what sort of anti-freeze agent should be used? provided i use a CW5000 chiller and do not want to purge it everytime it use the machine.

i believe that "mecanically", everything would work (= does not chill), but i am bothered by the electric interaction.. do some agents have conductivity which may endanger the machine?

do i have to just add an anti-freeze agent (like you do for the water in your car to wash the glass) to the water, or use a specialty coolant (which includes antifreeze agent by the way)

This older page was specifically for PC-water-cooling, but has some interesting points...

Do a search on anti freeze. I believe it is NOT to be used. Keep the water heated and circulating. Check some of Pepsi's posts.

A simple £8 aquarium heater will do the job. I use this one;

Important point is to check how low the lowest setting is. This one is 16C. So as soon as the temperature approaches it, it starts. Works REALLY well. Water never gets a chance to get near freezing. Really cheap to run too

That is some pricey stuff. I wonder if it is a special formulation or just a repackaging of antifreeze originally produced for some other application.

For safety, in case my aquarium heater fails I just installed a second into my water reservoir. Decided the second one would be for bigger tanks (eg it's for a 100L and my reservoir is only 20L) as I guess it will heat the water quicker once the trigger `low` temp is reached.
Have been watching my electric meter at the water is being kept above 16C for pennies every night.

Being a cynical fellow, I suspect the latter.

I does, however, suggest there's nothing wrong with using antifreeze in principle.

It looks like it is probably made by this company- they have *many* varieties of AF, maybe someone could read through all of them and figure out which is marketed for lasers? (Not me thanks) Gene

The best coolant for cooling in the winter is antifreeze based on propylene glycol. It is already proven years of experience. Here is a link to the discussion(language Russian, use google translator)
