Help - Red and Black 700x500 Laser Rotary Users

Postby Doug Fisher » Sat Jan 07, 2017 8:42 pm

Somebody please tell me that I am missing something simple! It has been a long 24 hours of ice, snow, 15 hours without power and a tree down on the property so I am hoping I am too tired and thus missing something.

The chuck style rotary attachment arrived Thursday with the usual minor damage from inadequate packaging. I cleaned it up, plugged in and confirmed it seem to operate/interface OK but I didn't lower the bed and try to do any engraving due to a lack of time. I finally found some time this evening to see if I could make it run. When I dropped the bed to it lowest point possible to try a test, I was disappointed to see the following. This is a common 60 mm diameter beer bottle. As you can see, there is no way I can fit my 18 mm focus gauge in between the bottle and the bottom of the nozzle.

Here is a 45 mm tube. Still not even enough room.
IMG_2819.JPG

The chuck sits high enough that my nozzle will not even clear it.

Am I missing something? If this beer bottle won't work, then a coffee cup, Yeti-style tumbler, wine glass or wine bottle is not going to fit. This rotary attachment was sold to me as having an 80 mm jaw and is the same thing the seller includes with his 700x500 Red and Black "package deals" that include a rotary attachment. The laser in that deal is just like my laser unit and has the same up/down travel range. Unless I am missing something though, I can't imagine this rotary engraver being used to engrave much more than pens and pencils.

How are other Red and Black owners doing rotary engraving of Yeti tumblers, cups. etc? Did you buy the three roller hot dog type attachment instead? Even if I bought a 1.5 lens, there still isn't going to be enough room for the focus gauge to sit in between the nozzle and wider items like Yeti , etc.

A bonus resulting from these pictures is that they revealed I had not noticed the nice growth of rust along the lower sides of my X axis rails. One more problem to add to the list to tackle.

Doug I just saw your PM, but I don't have a chuck style rotary, I have the hotdog roller that came with my laser. I also have the 300x500mm blue and white, but I just put the bed down all the way and I have ~240mm from the bed to the nozzle so I think I have a lot more depth to work with.

Is that honeycomb removable? What is limiting your Z travel?

Thanks, Dustin. I guess I could separate the honeycomb upper part and put the rotary down on the subframe below the honeycomb but after removing that just two times now I have already had one mounting screw strip the subframe's recieving hole's threads (and I am very careful about that). Removing the honeycomb portion might gain me 20 mm more depth but I don't think that will be enough for anything much wider than that beer bottle.

Do you have any problems with slippage when using your hot dog roller style unit?

That sucks. I don't really have problems, but I use rubber bands and/or TPU rings that I've made for specific cups and bottles and I limit the Y speed to 20mm/s most times. What I can't stand about the hotdog rollers is nothing but a uniform diameter cylinder will work without extra effort. For now I am designing TPU rings to slip on, but that is too much work. I am looking forward to trying that open source rotary tool.

Hello, rotate your rotary axis by 90 °, so put it on the side

The Bodor I have came with a really nice rotary and altho the Z has 5-6 inches of travel it is almost useless for the same reason- I can get a 1" dowel only under the nozzle. I have ordered a 3 phase stepper for it and will use it on my larger laser. Gene

Russ's video gives the dxf file for creating the height adjustable attachment for the hot dog roller that makes it very easy to do non-cylindrical items.

Thanks for all of the replies. Pierre, your recommendation gives me hope. That is the kind of thing I was too tired to think of last night!

Gene, that is a very nice rotary. I saw something similar in Epilog or Trotec videos. One of them even had a scissor adjustment on the end to raise and lower the end in order to create a flat engraving plane for non-straight sided items (e.g. beer pint glasses).

Yessir- this one has that as well. I built one from open source plans (info on the forum somewhere) that I believe that Dustin and Keith are building too.
It has a device to raise one end as well. It didn't work for me as my machine is 3 phase steppers. Gene
