Nesting Function of RDWorks 8.01.21

Post by Doug Fisher » Sun Dec 25, 2016 1:20 am

I downloaded .21 just to try out the nesting function. Unfortunately, it seems a bit limited in terms of how many different directions it can manipulate/rotate the designed piece in order to maximize yield from a given size sheet of material.

As an example, if I create a part that is just a vertical rectangle 5 mm wide by 30 mm tall and then run the nesting function for my theoretical 700 x 500 piece of material, the software will maximize output based on just flipping the item from 0 to 180/180 to 0 or 90 to 270/270 to 90. This leaves an area of wasted/unused material along the top edge of the 700 x 500 theoretical piece of material I am cutting (the area poorly circled in red shown in the image below). The software will not rotate the vertical rectangle 90 degrees to make it horizontal. If it could do so, the software would be able to utilize that top area and increase the overall yield per sheet.

If I am missing something, please let me know.

Not sure what you want. It takes a bit of work, but not much. 400 x 600 though.

Fitting to a sheet of material sized to be an even multiple of the part's dimensions like you used in your example is pretty un-demanding. I was just hoping this software was like other nesting software that could really maximize the yield of a given part from whatever size piece of material was specified. Most decent nesting software would have rotated the part on to its side and filled up the unused (circled in red) area as much as possible.
