Acrylic Question

Post by Brian Book » Tue Dec 27, 2016 1:32 pm

Hello All

I have a question about Acrylic .... I know that Cast Acrylic is Good for Engraving and Extruded Acrylic is good for cutting .... which one would one use for most projects ? .... example = laser cutting and engraving.

I'm heading out tomorrow to stock up on Acrylic and was wondering if I needed both Cast and Extruded or just get away with one type for now ?

I will be getting 4'x8' sheets of 2mm , 3mm , and 6mm does this sound about right for most acrylic projects ?

Thanx for any and all responses :)

Extruded is most common [and cheaper] - I use mostly 3 & 6 mm clear but white comes in handy too. Gene

This is one of the best writeups I have seen on cast vs. extruded. I don't take credit for finding it. Someone posted this link on one of the forums and luckily I was smart enough to bookmark it. In my opinion, this is worthy of consideration for the FAQ page.

Just to give everyone an update .... I visited the Plastic Supplier .... it turns out they do displays and signage .... so basically they just keep Extruded Acrylic in stock, but they can order me in Cast .... they were kind enough to give me a few pieces of Extruded to play with:)

So the quest continues to find Cast stocked in my area ... or bite the bullet and order a sheet of each size.

And Baltic Birch is almost non-existent in my area ???

Thanx for all the input :)

There are a few companies in Canada that sell it. Shipping is the problem.
On the west coast there are probably two https://www.westwindhardwood.com/ (they will ship) and I am trying to find the link for the other - seems they have been bought out!

I bought 2 lifts of 12 mm 5'x5' (88 sheets total) from Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Another source might be Windsor Plywood.
Rona might be able to get it for you - they were flogging Chinese Birch 3/4" 4x8 sheets.
There should be a BIG Lumber Wholesaler in your area - they might sell a few sheets to you.
