From Mike_C:

When I need to make precise parts I use either Onshape or Fusion360. Both offer free plans and can export DXF files.

Here is a good youtube video from Fusion360 on how to create files for your laser. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7riGolu7BpA

Another thumbs up for Qcad for a free drawing program. It is a very easy transition for people who are moving from an older version of AutoCAD.

at first, i was unable to use inkscape to create drawings that were enough "cad" like... until i discovered that you can add a grid (for example, 1mm grid), and you can make "cusp nodes" be attracted to the grid (not just the bounding box of each shape).

with this, you can, for example, draw a rectangle, convert to path, then "glue" the nodes to the grid to have perfect sizing, and then using the path tools (add/remove nodes, node properties, ...) to litteraly make whatever you want.

the weak point is you can not really create "technical" drawing, ie. inkscape is not very good if you want to compute intersections, cut paths along the intersection, draw parallel/perpendicular lines to any existing line... but for rectangular box design, this is ok.

I use Qcad..!

It's a very very nice and free cad solution.
Very easy to use and perfect for our small machines.
