Acetal Homopolymer (aka: Delrin)

Postby Joshua Vasquez » Thu Nov 24, 2016 8:13 pm

Hey folks,

I few years ago I discovered Acetal Homopolymer (aka: Delrin and PMMA), and have committed to it as my go-to material.

First off, it's relatively cheap, as in $9 for an eighth-inch (3.175mm) plate from

Next, it lases about as well as Acrylic in that the material undergoes a strict phase change when being hit by the laser. The benefit for us is that there are no char marks to worry about, just a buttery-smooth surface finish.

Finally, it's far less brittle than acrylic and a far better approximation of a contiuum than wood that it's become my go-to material for functional prototypes (mini robot drivetrains!)

Yes, there are some drawbacks (for one, it doesn't glue to anything), but with some foresight most of these issues can be circumvented with some classic engineering techniques. To get you started working with Delrin, I wrote a few articles over the last year.

Thanks for the info Joshua, going to have to pick some Acetal to test it out. The heat set inserts were especially interesting I never thought of that, so may possibilities.

Nice find. I added it to the master list.
