Newbies - Solving the Inkscape to RDWorks Drawing Size Import .dxf Problem

If you are looking for a freeware program that does a decent job of providing the same tools as the $$$ Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw, Inkscape is something to try. There are many YouTube tutorials to speed you along the learning curve for Inkscape.

Besides its drawing capabilities, Inkscape is also very useful because it imports many file types directly that RDWorks will not import. For instance, you can import a .pdf file (some free box creation programs only output to a .pdf) into Inkscape and then output the drawing file via "save as" to a .dxf or .plt file which RDWorks CAN import.

Probably the most common frustration when doing this is when your drawing dimensions do not measure the same after importing into RDWorks. To correct this, you must change both the current drawing and "save as" parameters to millimeters within Inkscape.

To change the current drawing, you do this by going File > Document Properties. Then on that newly opened window change the choice to mm near "Default units" and again at "Units."

To change the "save as" parameters, go File > Save As > choose desired file type (e.g. .dxf) > navigate to the desired directory, input desired file name > choose save > a new window pops up > change "Base unit" to mm > click OK.

This will save the file in mm so that RDWorks will import it with the correct dimensions in mm.

When you start a new file or restart Inkscape, you must go and reconfirm the document properties each time. In my experience, the mm settings get reset to pts (points) each time.
